Symphonic Works

In February of 2005, Brasilia premiered their new dynamic arrangements for symphony orchestra of music from their CD, River Wide. The concerts took place with Brasilia as guest artists with the Rochester Philharmonic, and with the Vancouver Symphony.

Jeff Tyzik, the principal Pops Conductor of both orchestras, conducted these concerts. Ted Moore and Mr. Tyzik were responsible for the symphonic arrangements, which feature the orchestra as much as Brasilia, in a true collaborative musical presentation.

As the audiences found out in Rochester and Vancouver, it is truly exciting to hear this music expanded to symphonic proportions. On Saturday night in Rochester, the audience, in fact, was on its feet prior to the end of the show, being swept away by the power and emotion of the performance.

The arrangements reflect the full musical and emotional range of Brazilian music, from the gentle ballad, "Samba Em Preludio", sung as a duo of voice and guitar with strings, to the rousing samba finale of "Tudo Joia", with full orchestra accompanying the infectious samba rhythms of Brasilia. In between were many moments that featured members of Brasilia as well as members of the orchestra.

As a vocal group, the original music of Brasilia features the extraordinary voice of Pamela Driggs, who is perfectly at home singing in English or Portuguese, and who has fully embraced the music of Brazil about which she is so passionate. In addition, the music features the soloing of two of the most heralded jazz musicians performing today, Romero Lubambo on guitar, and Phil Markowitz on piano. Pamela's voice along with Mr. Lubambo's and Mr. Markowitz' solos are only enhanced by the beauty of the symphonic accompaniment.

Along with conductor Jeff Tyzik's creative programming in the the first half of the concert, for which he has become very known and very much in demand as a guest conductor all over the country, this is a wonderful showcase for an evening where Brazilian music meets the symphony, combining lush bossa nova with the celebration of samba.
